Science experiment! Elephant Toothpaste

This classic experiment is a great way to get the discussion going on chemical reactions. To use it as an experiment, perform it once with your child, then ask your child what might happen if you changed the amounts or left out an ingredient. Let them direct the experiment! 

The foam is also safe to touch.  It is simply water, oxygen gas, and soap, so if your child has no soap allergies, she can experience and experiment with the texture of the foam!

Materials for DIY Elephant Toothpaste

  • Plastic bottle
  • Funnel
  • Food coloring
  • Dish soap
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Active dry yeast
  • Large tray

This is what you need to do:

  1. In bottle, mix 2 cups hydrogen peroxide, 1 teaspoon dish soap, 20 drops food coloring
  2. Place bottle in tray to protect surface you’re working on.
  3. In smaller bowl, mix 2 tablespoons yeast and 6 tablespoons warm water. Let sit for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour yeast mixture into bottle and watch explode!
